Steam Punk Earthquake in Baltimore

2011 29”h, 20”w, collage

The history of Baltimore is the history of the railroad in America, as it is the farthest inland port on the east coast. Indeed, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is the oldest railroad in the United States and the first common carrier railroad. In 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Richmond, VA. was felt in Baltimore. Here, Foer symbolizes it by the broken columns, which represent Shot Tower, a Baltimore landmark and lead shot manufacturing facility in operation from 1828 to 1892. Foer utilizes a 1948 concentric map illustrating how far each circular district is from the central post office as the foundation of her composition.
