After the Deluge: Infrastructure for a Fragmented Island

Related

collage, watercolour, gouache and hardware  2022  19.5”h, 25”w

An island is supported with iron girders to prevent it from being subsumed by the ocean.  Can indented area is left where land once stood. These very phenomena can be seen on landforms such as Vanuatu and Kiribati in the South Pacific and, closer to home, in Louisiana. Meanwhile, species are migrating to and from the island, as characteristically happens when an island is cut off from the mainland; that is the focus of the research field of island biogeography. While making this composition, I was listening to news reports of severe flooding in Florida after Hurricane Ian and wondering when people would realize that the affected area would soon become uninhabitable”?
