Tulip bulbs were brought to Holland (by way of Prague) from Turkey. In a similar way, tulip motifs, popular in Turkish textile and ceramic designs, migrated to European design.
The tulips on the right are illustrated with Turkish design elements and those on the left mimic how Europeans depicted tulips in the 17th century, during Tulipmania. I thought of this as tracing the tulip bulbs’ ancestry back to Turkey, a la Ancestry dot com.
